Craiglist founder launches scathing attack on print
Internet entrepreneur Craig Newmark, the man behind the phenomenally successful classifieds service craigslist.com, condemned the print industry as “screwed” during his opening remarks at the Newspaper Association of America’s annual conference.
According to Newmark, newspapers’ business models will have to change as more people are turning to the internet to get their news and because paper is “too expensive”. Recent Nielsen//NetRatings NetView statistics have showed that the number of internet users who choose to read news online has grown 5.3% year on year.
Craiglist, which has recorded 7bn page views of 17m new classifieds each month, impacts directly on newspapers’ classified revenues. The service already operates in key UK cities, including London, Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool.
