Xerox toner shortage will be over by Christmas: BPIF
Xerox's toner shortage, which has affected a number of Xerox 700 users, should be resolved by Christmas, the BPIF has said.
Toner for the Xerox 700 has been in short supply worldwide in the past couple of weeks, with many printers unable to use their machines for periods of up to seven days.
Figures of £5,000 in lost earnings have been reported – with all but one of 19 Xerox 700 users contacted affected by the toner problems.
Xerox has not elaborated on the reasons behind the demand problem, but said that it was a short-term issue.
Peter Vincent, head of technical services at the BPIF, told PrintWeek that he had spoken to "people who decide things" at Xerox.
He said: "I have been given direct assurance by Xerox that things will be back to normal by the end of next week (25 December).
"I don't know why they were caught out, but I have made it clear to them they need to make sure their own people are giving the truth and consistent messages."
Many of the affected printers have told PrintWeek they that intend to seek compensation from Xerox. They have reported a number of reasons given by the supplier for the problem.
Industry specialist lawyer Philippa Dempster said that printers should check their contracts with the supplier.
She explained: "Sometimes, companies have it in the contract that something outside of their control enables them to escape responsibilities. The contract may also limit liability.
"It is possible for the court to look at these clauses under the Unfair Contract Terms Act. If you have bought kit and can't use it, they (Xerox) could be considered responsible."
Xerox has declined to comment on the scale of problem, but said that it was "doing its best" to address any customer concerns.
"We want to make sure we help as much as we can and we are working very, very hard. If customers want to contact us with any concerns, we will do our best to answer any questions," a spokesman said.

The industry lawyer quoted The Unfair Contract Terms Act as a possible remedy (through the courts).
I'd be extremely surprised if that was a possible route to compensation and it would presumably be an expense risk to take.

Can anyone outside of Europe tell me if they have experienced similar issues with toners?
Wish all you EU guys luck!

I bet the Xerox man was quacking in his boots when he knew somebody from the mighty BPIF was on the line. The BPIF have now got involved so its all sorted and we can all sleep at night whilst still waiting for our toner.

"the Xerox man was quacking in his boots... "
Don't look at me, I don't wear boots! Quake!
Burned Out - 21 December 2009
Xerox - to big for their boots and a nasty company to deal with - to quote a large digital printer who currently has all Xerox kit - "another Xerox machine will never cross my threshold again"

I have been working on the basis of Christmas 2009. Seems I was wrong.
Xerox have now advised that they are delivering the most recent orders and writing off the old orders! So, if you are waiting for orders pre 4th December - you may well find they have been cancelled and theoretically fulfilled with something else.
Still, my regional manager has moved directly from being ill to two weeks holiday.
This has been an excellent supplier learning curve and I look forward to joining the swing to Konica.

Lets get to the point - the reason there is a toner shortage is not due to unexpected demand - it is down to the fact that the cheap chinese company who won the tender to supply them has delivered a load of sub standard units - Xerox had the same problem with drums earlier in the year!
'Not A Doctor' (NDCT) - 22 December 2009
Burned Out - so this toner shortage is not going to be over by Christmas, then?
Burned Out - 22 December 2009
Not A Doctor - Probably will be because they will be re-manufacturing to that deadline - your guess is as good as mine - but don't expect any truth from Xerox. Earlier in the year they "re-structured" their call centre and left us with a broken machine for 4 days - in the end their Engineer felt sorry for us and repaired it in HIS OWN TIME!

I meant Christmas 2009.....
Paul Newman - 22 December 2009
Ok toner not so much of a problem now, but Fuser Webs are.... this is as bad as no toner. Unbelievable.

The duck just wet himself, still laughing NDCT!
'Not A Doctor' (NDCT) - 23 December 2009
Thanks Stanley.
Have yourself a very good one - you'll be pleased to know we're having turkey in the Dalek household!
Stanley Dingtype - 23 December 2009
A good and very diplomatic choice
Best wishes
Stanley

The good news - Xerox prioritised us on Tuesday! We're going to get toner.
The bad news - Xerox Father Christmas didn't arrive at our house! They will sell you a Digital Press - but cannot supply the toner.
Happy Christmas from Xerox.
'Not A Doctor' (NDCT) - 24 December 2009
I hope that doesn't mean I have to do another cartoon, Peter!
Maybe go back to litho next year, eh? I may even get my letterpress machines out of the store.
Happy Christmas, mate.
Edna Bag - 24 December 2009

Xerox will deliver by Christmas - didn't happen. Now by the 26th - really? We will see what the 29th brings. Not toner supplies surely. We were told that they shut down production in Eastern Europe - so here's another story to add to the list of excuses. Xerox 700 - fantastic - back up and supplies ... it's all been said! Great finish to the end of the year - lots of work and no means of production - and the future is digital?
Edna Bag - 27 December 2009
You have to feel sorry for the BPIF really its seems they have taken too much notice of Nostradamus and too many who tell it ''like you wanna hear its''.
You have to feel sorry for the guys relying on the toner and kit for that matter, you also have to wonder at the ability of Xerox to deliver at any level, when so many have so much at risk and just how far you can trust the word of corporate, especially when there are so few options on supply. Out of interest when they changed supply country, did the guys using the toner get a price cut as well?
'Not A Doctor' (NDCT) - 27 December 2009
Suddenly multichannel development makes perfect sense, Edna....
'Not A Doctor' (NDCT) - 04 January 2010
Thought we might need a new title for this, now.
Happy New Year, everyone!

How about ''BPIF, tells off Xerox for making them look everso silly''
OR ''BPIF's Brown chucks teddy out of pram over Xerox Toner fiasco''
Merry Easter
Rola Cola - 04 January 2010
Or we could simply go with,
"BPIF - Do they really know what they are doing?"
'Not A Doctor' (NDCT) - 05 January 2010
In case you didn't notice, the first sentence of the article says:
Note the word 'should'.
Amazingly this metamorphed into 'will' in the headline...... sack the sub!
Jon Fennell - 05 January 2010
Well spotted NDCT, looks as though BPIF have taken some flack for no real reason.
Shame on you all for having a go at BPIF on this one.

Only up to a point, Jon. Were Xerox incapable of speaking for themselves?

[/quote]Do Xerox really give a sh*t, they are pretty arrogant, it comes with controlling supply and demand. Maybe users should be testing out the terms of contract for fairness and seeking compensation for loss of click.
