PPA secures industry first with digital annual report

The Periodical Publishers Association (PPA) has produced the industry's first annual report to be published as a fully integrated digital edition.

Mirroring the current trend of providing content in both print and digital format, the PPA teamed up with Fresh Media Group (FMG) subsidiary Ceros Media to convert its 2007/08 annual review into a digital edition.

Membership director Jane Salliss said: "Members have told us they would like to receive information in different ways. This is why PPA took the decision to provide its annual report in a print and digital format."

The digital edition, which was published last week – several months after the print edition – makes full use of Ceros' page-turning digital technology and includes embedded video footage, graphs, additional text, hyperlinks and rotating images.

Dominic Duffy, managing director of Ceros, said: "The PPA has long been an advocate of the inherently engaging qualities and editorial values of the magazine format. In producing the industry's first integrated annual report, they have not only showcased engagement, but provided interaction and live dialogue as well."

The digital edition can be viewed at online by clicking here.

The digital edition is very hard to read online. The navigation of the pages are awkward.

I downloaded the PDF edition and found the software did not download every element with some text even turned to low-res pixels making it impossible to read.

Shame the downloaded PDF did not include the movie.

I guess it is early days for this sort of delivery system and I would have thought that this would have been thoroughly road-tested before being launched to the fastidious print community.

Nice idea and i am sure that this is a good medium for content delivery. The links to all the members web sites on the full members list was a nice touch.

I believe that the digital editions market is now reasonable mature. However, different software solutions are best for different purposes, and preparation of the pdf in the correct fashion is also important. The Ceros software is well-proven and used by many publishers.

The key for digital editions is to understand how to use them, and to have a strategy for this channel. A digital edition should be regarded as an additional channel to a website, not a replacement.

Any web designer worth his/her salt, can tell you that a simple page flip can be completed within 10mins - even our biggest book 294 pages - are well within the DDA AA guidelines.

Cost? Hard to say but a well provided PDF, less than £10 per 100 pages.

If you don't know the DDA AA guidlines, you shouldn't be making comments.

Sorry, but Annual Reports have been produced in page turning digital editions for several years already....

But it is great to see another Association leading the way.....

Many PPA members are making good use of digital editions and despite the nayslayers who have nothing better to do - digital edition use is continuing to rise year on year...

The advent of FREE online facilities to convert PDF to page turning format in minutes (such as www.yudufreedom.com and others) will no doubt help to increase use even further...

Well done PPA and Ceros.
