Anti-counterfeiting tech: fighting wine fraud
Kodak helps thwart wine fraud with anti-counterfeit technology
By Jill Park Tuesday, 05 June 2007
Kodak is using new high-tech anti-counterfeiting technology to help several Napa Valley vineyards in the fight against wine fraud.
The new system adds invisible markers to printing inks, paper and packaging that can be read using handheld readers to prove authenticity of the wine.
Wineries such as Colgin Cellars, HL Vineyards, Staglin Family Vineyard and Vineyard 29 have already been sent the readers in tamper-proof packaging.
Wine fraud is a rising problem, said Kodak Graphic Communications Group general manager and director of security solutions Steve Powell.
Industry experts estimate the problem could affect up to 5% of wines sold in secondary markets.
Vineyard 29 owner Chuck McMinn said: “Our anti-counterfeiting solution does not interfere with the process we use to bottle our wines – it only enhances the product by ensuring the authenticity of our wines.”
Kodak will be exhibiting its security solutions at Booth 5H at Vinexpo in Bordeaux, France on June 17-21.
