Covert marking helps to combat counterfeiters
Friday, 01 September 2006
DataLase has developed a way to protect packaging and documents from counterfeiting.
Called Guardmark, this tamper-proof encapsulated imaging system applies variable microscopic images or text with a resolution of up to 10,000 dpi directly to the surface of a product or pack. The process can create images directly between the layers of a clear laminate film or self-adhesive label while maintaining the integrity of the top layer. DataLase guarantees a permanent image and tamper-resistance.
Trevor Wilson, business development director at DataLase, said: “Guardmark’s ability to print variable micro images is what differentiates it from standard technology. Our Packmark, for example, applies best-before dates or bar codes, but Guardmark applies microscopic text that cannot be seen with the naked eye. It is also possible to change the position of the text, making it difficult to counterfeit.”
Guardmark provides three levels of protection. Firstly, it allows covert marking of products with images or text; secondly, it allows encrypted data to be scanned and machine verified, and thirdly, covert, hidden images can be forensically analysed and laser marked. The process can be applied to general packaging materials, plastic, metal and glass.
