ISO publishes product coding standard

Tuesday, 10 February 2009

The International Organisation for Standardisation has published a product marking standard designed to help with the recognition of on-pack labelling between different industry sectors.

The ISO 28219:2009, 'Packaging – Labelling and direct product marking with linear bar code and two-dimensional symbols', aims to define machine- and human-readable content as well as the symbols used to identify products.

Hirokuni Ono, chair of the ISO technical committee on packaging said, in comparison to market-specific labels, a common standard was "a necessity to provide effective and economic use" of product marking between industry sectors.

"A standard linear bar code or two-dimensional product will facilitate the automation of inventory and quality control and life-cycle management," he added.
