Traceless: handheld reader checks covert mark

Security expert highlights confusion in fight against fraud

Brand owners and their packagers must guard against being seduced by the range of anti-counterfeiting technology on offer, according to a leading brand protection expert.

Igi LeRoux, technical director and partner of brand security consultancy Secura Monde International, argued that brand protection was the single biggest issue for brands, yet most companies failed to quantify money lost through counterfeiting.

LeRoux, speaking at an event hosted by Kodak in Milan yesterday (23 October), also said RFID technology was "hard to deploy".

In July, Kodak launched its Traceless technology, which uses a bespoke marking system to protect against counterfeiting and product diversion.

The covert marker can be included on packaging or within product itself, with no affect on the host product, and is read using a handheld reader developed by Kodak.

Pricing for the system, which has already been used in the pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and fashion industries, depends on volumes.
