MWV cuts 80 German jobs

MeadWestvaco (MWV) is to cut 80 jobs in Germany after restructuring its Hemer-based operation that manufactures trigger sprays for cleaning and gardening products.

The job losses form part of MWV's cost management programme that was announced in January and the restructuring is expected to be completed by the beginning of next year.

MWV will shift some production to its Wuxi facility in China, from where it will supply select products into Europe. The restructuring is designed to allow the site to focus on developing trigger sprays.

MWV president Jim Buzzard said: "We are improving MWV's immediate performance and long-term strength in the home and garden business by making clear determinations about which product lines have growth potential and those that are less attractive in the future."

Hemer also houses personal care and healthcare operations that are not affected by the reconfiguration.

MWV has operated in Hemer since 1972 and currently employs 495 staff. It has engaged a transfer agency to help find new jobs for affected employees who are eligible for severance benefits in accordance with employment terms and local laws.

MWV said in January it would cut 2,000 jobs, 10% of its workforce, over the course of the year.
