PrintWeek Awards 2012: The judges

Evaluating hundreds of entries - and getting on for 1,000 individual pieces of print - is a major task and one that takes place over three separate judging days.
To carry out this immense task, PrintWeek enlisted the help of 27 print buyers and industry specialists, who were selected for their expertise across the various disciplines that were being judged, and who were split into teams, each of which deliberated over a selection of categories appropriate to their field of knowledge.
The scoring system
- For the Quality Awards, the judges mark each applicant on a scale from one to 10, with 10 being the highest score
- The marks are then totted up to arrive at the winner and the commended entries from the shortlisted entrants
- The totting-up process sees a natural break emerge, separating those with the highest marks – the shortlisted companies – from the other entrants. Hence, the varying lengths of the shortlists

Head of operations, Telegraph Media Group
Stav joined the Telegraph Media Group in 2000. In her current role she is responsible for the production of all of the group’s newspapers and magazine supplements as well as well as its outsourced print and paper procurement and promotional merchandise material. Her department manages everything from negotiating and arranging the production of specialist magazine products through to paper napkins for the group’s Christmas parties.
Partner, Hurtwood Press
Francis is a partner at Hurtwood Press, an award-winning fine art and photographic book consultancy. Over the past 25 years, Francis has worked with companies in the US, Europe and the Middle East and his practical experience spans letterpress, gravure, screen, offset litho and digital. As well as project managing the production of some of the world’s most beautiful books, he speaks in the UK and US on high-quality digital printing.
Print manager, B&Q
Judith has a wide range of print experience, having worked in the retail arena for nearly 23 years, 13 of which have been with B&Q’s marketing department. In her role as print manager, she is responsible for all aspects of print production, with products ranging from POS displays and external signage, through to brochures and internal communications. She is also responsible for investigating new innovations.
Head of production operations, Penguin
Nicky has worked in publishing and production for 22 years across both books and journals. Prior to her current role at Penguin she was head of production at the The Lancet, the internationally renowned medical journal owned by Elsevier. Nicky was responsible for transforming the look and feel of The Lancet in 2005 and her production team won an award for their innovative approach to the journal’s production.
Head of print management, BSkyB
Mark has worked in the industry for 12 years, first buying print at The Independent and then at various other companies before arriving at BSkyB to head its print management team. He has worked in a number of fields, from commercial print to DM and POS, and is keenly interested in the fast-paced developments of variable digital print and cross-media. He says that heading up print management at BSkyB is as exciting and exhilarating today as it was the day he started.
Purchasing manager, POS & field merchandise, L’Oréal UK & Ireland
Claire leads a busy POS purchasing team of six at L’Oréal. Having previously held senior procurement roles at Williams Lea and Save the Children, Claire has experience of buying all types of print, but her early career was spent in magazine production with publishers such as VNU and National Magazine Company. Her ambition is to run a small but perfectly stocked newsagent catering to Londoners’ diverse languages, trends and pastimes.
Head of catalogue & online production, Boden
During her 12 years at Boden, Claire has managed massive growth, overseeing the rise in production from 6m catalogues per year in the UK, to 60m catalogues worldwide. Claire has extensive knowledge of variable digital, sheetfed, web offset and gravure catalogue production in the UK, Europe and US and has recently extended her online experience by launching Boden’s iPad app in the UK and US.
Managing director, Angel Productions
Angel has more than 14 years’ experience working within the print, packaging and POS sectors, spending a decade specialising in the home entertainment sector. She has a history of success in both agency and client sectors, as well as a strong track record as a print consultant. Her clients have included Tate Modern, Darley, Nokia, 20th Century Fox, Sony Pictures, MGM, Universal Studios and Dreamworks. She runs consultancy business Angel Productions.
Publishing operations controller, Tesco
Geoff has 32 years’ print industry experience. Over the course of his career, he has managed catalogue and print production for blue-chip businesses including Argos and Littlewoods. In 2006, Geoff was recruited to deliver the Tesco Direct catalogue to the market. Geoff’s responsibility within Tesco covers all aspects of reprographics, printing and publishing and the operational management of two sites: Tesco Media Publishing and Tesco Print Centre.
Print production co-ordinator, Imperial War Museums
Kay is responsible for print buying across Imperial War Museums’ (IWM) five branches: IWM London, IWM North, IWM Duxford, Churchill War Rooms and HMS Belfast. She began her career in magazine publishing, working on business and consumer titles for Sterling Publications and Wilmington Group. She then moved into the not-for-profit sector, handling print production for charities Save the Children and Macmillan Cancer Support.
Procurement manager, AA & Saga
Ryan’s career in the print industry began in 1988 as an apprentice printer at Hobbs the Printers in Southampton. His print buying career began in 2002, when he joined Centrica as print purchasing manager for British Gas, One Tel, and The AA, before joining K2 (Dsicmm) as an Account Director in 2006. In 2008 he returned to buying as procurement manager at the Acromas Group, where he manages print and mailing for the group’s companies, including the AA and Saga.
European print production manager, Lands’ End
Joanne heads up production for the US-based mail-order clothing company in the UK and Germany, working with catalogue and collateral printers across Europe. Joanne has spent most of her working life in print production, mainly in the magazines sector, acquiring specialist knowledge of pre-press, print, paper, distribution and procurement. She has worked for businesses as diverse as New Statesman, The Listener and VNU Business Publications.
Print & production services manager, RHS Media
Diana manages the magazine production process for The Garden, one of the UK’s leading gardening magazines, from production and print and paper purchasing to the contracting of repro services and fulfilment and distribution. She is also responsible for managing centralised print procurement for the entire Royal Horticultural Society. Happily employed in publishing since 1995, Diana previously worked for Macmillan and the IET.
Senior print executive, Honda Trading Europe
Amanda has been working in print and marketing for more than 10 years and has been with Honda for the past four years. In her current role she is in charge of sourcing all the print requirements of Honda (UK), covering everything from DM pieces and brochures, through to POS and merchandise. She also works closely with Honda Motor Europe to assist the company with its planning and strategy for printing across the rest of Europe.
On leaving the London College of Printing nearly 35 years ago, Andrew joined St Ives Group as its first ever management trainee and has since been involved with pre-press, sheetfed and web offset print. He has worked in production, commercial and sales departments, both buying and selling print. Andrew started am:pm as a consultancy to help customers to place the right job on the right press. Halftone dots still excite him and he is prepared to admit that digital can be pretty good too.
Founder, Print & Procurement
Matthew has more than 20 years’ print buying experience, including a number of years heading up print purchasing at Future Publishing. However, Matthew is now a sought-after consultant for both buyers and printers, running workshops on topics as diverse as challenging traditional sales, negotiation, best practice for customer-facing staff and managing customers. He’s also an accomplished author, publishing books including The Print Industry Negotiation Handbook.
Production manager, English Heritage
Elaine has worked in print for 30 years on both the production and client side. For the past decade she has headed up production at English Heritage, during which time she secured a degree in print media management. Elaine’s achievements include managing leaflet campaigns, books and academic titles. She has also implemented the ISO 12647 colour-management training programme and has written and managed procurement framework agreements at English Heritage.
Print & production manager, National Trust
Graham has been in the print and publishing industry for more than 35 years, having worked in print production, repro and publishing. He joined the National Trust five years ago and has responsibility for purchasing everything from the humble business card through to high-volume DM and millions of copies of the Trust’s books and magazines. It’s his job to ensure that all printed output meets the Trust’s stringent quality and ethical standards.
Senior procurement consultant, marketing services, supply chain & operations
A senior procurement professional, there are few sectors that Nancy hasn’t worked in. Her experience includes industries such as luxury, retail, publishing, travel, financial services, health and beauty and FMCG on both client and agency side. She has managed global portfolios covering every area of print. In her career Nancy has led teams with a complex range of products and budgets and a truly international vendor base.
Production director, Immediate Media Company
Mal joined the BBC in 1980 and became BBC Magazines’ production director in 1994. He became production director of Immediate Media in October 2011 following its acquisition of BBC Magazines. Mal is responsible for an annual print purchasing budget of more than £40m. He is particularly proud to have contributed to the streamlining of digital file handling operations during his tenure as chair of the PPA Production and Technology committee.
Production director, William Reed
Christopher joined William Reed Business Media in June 1984 as a production trainee,after completing the publishing production course at the then London College of Printing. After holding various production roles at the B2B publisher, he was elevated to production director in June 1995. William Reed is a media-based organisation involved in the B2B sector specialising the food retail, manufacturing and hospitality markets.
Senior production manager, Egmont UK
Jayne is responsible for a team that annually handles the global manufacture of more than 10m books. Her career in publishing began more than 20 years ago at Dorling Kindersley, where she gained valuable experience working on both adult and children’s titles. Since then, she has worked in several UK publishing houses and the Italian print industry. As well as managing her UK-based team, she is also engaged on projects with the US office and the UK digital team.
Manager, Grant Thornton
Graham works as part of the advisory practice with particular expertise in data analysis and financial modelling. He has worked in a wide variety of businesses including companies in the print sector. His specialist expertise has been called upon in connection with capital raising, acquisitions, disposals, recovery and profit improvement assignments.
Partner, Grant Thornton
Daniel has wide experience of corporate finance, investigations, due diligence and advisory work, often including identifying and developing financial and operational restructuring opportunities and profit improvement schemes. Daniel and his team have acted behind the scenes on many of the high-profile acquisitions and restructurings across the print sector over the past 15 years, cementing Grant Thornton's position.
Owner, Formgraphics Retail
Peter entered the world of print originally through graphic design 18 years ago. However, over the past 11 years he has specialised in purchasing print for retailers, including Mosaic Fashions, which owned brands Oasis and Karen Millen. Seven years ago he set up Formgraphics Retail and over that period has worked with more than 30 fashion brands, such as Monsoon and Harvey Nichols, on a wide variety of graphical projects, delivering out to stores worldwide.
Consultant, Innventia Edge
Michael has more than 15 years’ experience in delivering environmental and sustainability consultancy projects. Michael is a consultant with Innventia Edge, a specialist R&D company serving the forest industries and the supply chains for packaging, printing and publishing, and paper and board. He has led a number of high-profile environment studies in these sectors and his experience includes lifecycle assessment studies, carbon footprinting and eco-label evaluations.
Founder, Clare Taylor Consulting
Clare is an independent environmental consultant with decades of experience in print, including time as a print buyer. Chair of the joint BPIF/BOSS Environment Committee and editor of GreenPrinter.co.uk, she also works with many well-known names in the industry on their environmental strategies and implementation. She is affiliated with a number of the UK’s environmental bodies and is a Chartered Environmentalist, as well as a Fellow of the RSA.
